Long Beach Unified School District serves more than 95,000 students in ninety-five public schools in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon on Catalina Island. Long Beach Unified School District is the third largest school district in California and has an incredible diversity. 46 different languages are spoken by Long Beach Unified School District students. The district is one of the largest employers in the area with over eight thousand people on the payroll. Long Beach Unified School District has gotten a lot of attention from national media for it’s high standards of achievement and behavior. LBUD has been on “Good Morning America,” CBS’s “This Morning,” “CNN Headline News” and NBC’s “Today Show.” The district has seen incredible growth, and in the late nineties a three hundred million dollar bond was passed for Long Beach Unified School District improvements. Long Beach Unified School District has an open enrollment program, but students residing in neighborhoods close to their schools have enrollment priority. There is also residency criteria based on parent employment—if one parent works in an area close to the school in question the student is considered to have residence near that school; however, nothing requires the school to admit that student to the school.
