Los Angeles Unified School District encompasses local districts 1 through 8 of the Los Angeles area and surrounding cities. The total area of the Los Angeles Unified School District is 710 square miles. In addition to the city of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District serves many other cities and several unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
Cities entirely within the Los Angeles Unified School District include Cudahy, Gardenia, Huntington Park, Lomita, Maywood, San Fernando, Vernon and West Hollywood. Cities that are partially within the Los Angeles Unified School District include Alhambra, Bell, Bell Gardens, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Carson, City of Commerce, Culver City, Downey, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lynwood, Montebello, Monterey Park, Ranchos Palo Verde, Rolling Hills Estate, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, South Gate, South Pasadena and Torrance. The cities of Alhambra, Calabasas, Santa Clarita and South Pasadena only have small parcels of land within the Los Angeles Unified School District and do not generate any enrollment.
Most schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District follow a single track calendar with the same key dates for each semester. Los Angeles Unified School District schools include Early Education Centers, Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Senior High Schools and Adult Education Centers. Within these categories, the Los Angeles Unified School District also contains Magnet Schools, Span Magnets, and Occupational Schools.
