The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest school district in the state of California. Not only does it educate over 136,000 students, but also the diversity of the student body in the San Diego Unified School District is amazing. Over 15 ethnic groups are represented in the schools, with over 60 languages and dialects spoken.
With such a diverse population, educational goals are important. The mission of the San Diego Unified school district is “To support student achievement by supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.” In order to support these goals the San Diego Unified School District has developed a multi-step plan.
In all classrooms, from kindergarten through 12th grade, importance is placed on the core subjects of reading, writing, and math. Students are tested on the local, state, and federal level through the year to gauge their progress and the success of the overall curriculum.
Emphasis is placed on hiring and retaining skilled teachers. By placing a value on highly trained teachers, the students are able to develop to their full potential. The San Diego Unified School District also places a high level of importance on maintaining quality classrooms as well as up-to-date resources. With the ever-growing importance of technology in daily life, San Diego Unified Schools hope to give their students every advantage by providing well-planned classrooms complete with the resources that all students need to become successful.
Perhaps the most important facet of the San Diego Unified School District is the value that it places on parental and community involvement. By partnering with local businesses, the San Diego Unified School District is able to receive goods, services, financial contributions, and in-kind gifts to support their schools. Parent volunteers contribute their time in the classroom doing administrative work, or helping as needed through the school system.
